The word emo often strikes as something very depressing and something that could make an impression of sadness, although the meaning ever since the 90’s has changed. With its origination from Washington, the word emo was earlier termed as ‘emocore’ which is a mixture of emotional and hardcore. The subculture of emocore further evolved amongst the youngsters and it tended to spread at a pretty high rate ever since the 90’s till date. It is often assumed that a subculture of emocore is only music. This is where we talk about the transformations that were carried out by the younger generation. The emocore subculture was popularly termed as emo subculture as every individual had an assumption and interpretation of his own. The emo culture was widely considered as a music genre whereas in the current day scenario it’s a subculture phenomenon that unifies music, behavior, fashion, style and way of life. The topics of emo mostly have nostalgia, the broken heart, the hope and self hatred.

Moving on from the origination of the subculture, we talk about the various forms it carries with it. Be it emotional fashion or how emotions can be dangerous to one, the subculture has spread immensely.

Combined with sport clothing and countless accessories, the person who tends to carry out the fashion is often spotted out with staggering hairstyles and strong make-up. The hairstyles, mostly unisex, are one way of spotting the emo fashion. One particular hairstyle is called the bang. It is usually straightened and further fixed with gel or wax. Emo clothing is another way to spot out this subculture. Tight jeans and t shirt, usually with printed texts or accessories or sometimes hardcore bands (that is if you’re going cult) is a common code amongst the emo representative. Accessories like bracelets, rings, body piercing particularly the lower lip is also common.

The emo-tional youth is often difficult to understand. Some say that the emo subculture is dangerous to the person and some try to justify it is safe or not. Different psychologists have defined the youth following the subculture as introverts who often tend to seek love and unfortunately, or fortunately, fall into the dark side of it. They suffer, cry and listen to the only one who understands them, hardcore bands. Emo subculture is often taken up between the age of 12-18 as per psychologists because it is a tendency amongst growing children to fall prey to the negativity they have possibly been facing for the first time. Several situations which came up in the previous few years have shocked parents and societies as it is something very unexpected and unwanted of. It is considered to be damaging the health and life of youngsters. Addiction to cigarettes, drugs or alcohol and something more dangerous than that is physically damaging your own body to “reduce” the pain. Suicide is a major issue that creates a feeling of fear whenever one hears about it. The society in the previous year’s faced the problem of suicide.

Although representative do argue, and quite truthfully, that one cannot judge and assume about a subculture because of some individual and emo subculture is not the only one which has some negative drawbacks.

Hippie (or hippy) subculture was originally a youth movement that arose in the United States during the mid-1960s and spread to other countries around the world. The word ‘hippie’ came from hipster, and was initially used to describe beatniks who had moved into New York City’s Greenwich Village and San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district. The origins of the terms hip and hep are uncertain, though by the 1940s both had become part of African American jive slang and meant “sophisticated; currently fashionable; fully up-to-date”

French Vogue’s Child Model

Vogue is one of the most globally recognized fashion and lifestyle magazine that is published monthly in 23 different national and regional editions. The French edition of Vogue magazine, Vogue Paris was first issued on June 15, 1920.

In December 2010, the January issue of French Vogue edited by Tom Ford ran one of the most controversial advertising campaigns of all times. It featured model, Thylane Lena-Rose Blondeau dolled up in heavy make-up and gold stilettos posing seductively on leopard print bed covers. This may not sound unusual, as we are talking about a Vogue fashion shoot – except the fact that our model was just TEN years old. Yes, you read that correctly, Miss. Blondeau was just TEN years old.

We have seen many child models on the cover pages of magazines, however many people felt sickened by this campaign.Rather than portraying the innocence of a typical 10 year old girl raiding her mother’s closet to play dress up, the images were shown as highly sexualised. Even though this wasn’t the first time, Blondeau had been posing and posturing among the industry’s elite, many people thought that the young girl was portrayed a little too grown up for photo spreads in magazines like French Vogue, she was made to pose in a manner that didn’t reflect her innocence, this campaign painted a very disturbing picture.

Véronika Loubry (Blondeau’s mother) spoke in her daughter’s defense saying that there is nothing shocking about the images and it’s merely a fashion photo shoot and that there are a number of young models now days. Even if to an extent this is the case, there is concern over the fact that sexual predators are able to access these pictures and others like them and that can lead to some serious trouble and cyber crime.

I personally feel that, the sexualisation of children in the media is an area of huge concern. Children first need enough time to develop physically, emotionally and socially before they begin to learn about sexuality. However, when children as small as 10 year old are subjected to images like these, there isn’t much we can do or say about physical, social and emotional development. Sexualized images can have lasting effects on the young girls who see them. It affects how girls think about femininity and sexuality, promoting “appearance and physical attractiveness” as key values. It’s also linked to low self-esteem, eating disorders and depression as they develop a false image of how they are supposed to look at a particular age. Cases like this are also closely linked to child beauty pageants, which have also been subject to a growing amount of controversy. Images such as these have paved the way for a recent Government initiative in the UK to enforce restrictions on the sexualisation of children in the media and sexual content in advertising.

It’s sad that, there is a need to dress up a 10 year old like an adult, what happened to innocence and staying true to your age?
